Who has the Strangest Melodies? Live. Paul Dolden 2009. 13’25”

For tape and :Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Tenor Sax, Trumpet,
French Horn, Tuba.

Commissioned by the Ensemble Phoenix (Switzerland)

In the last few years I have been using dance rhythms from different cultures to create a new sense of counterpoint in my music. First, I analyze the timing relationships between various percussion instruments. Then these timing relationships are used to create the counterpoint for the live parts of this work. The result is that the live instruments perform the same melody but at different rates, or speeds. In addition the live parts are often micro-tonal in order to increase their effect of strangeness. The title is an allusion towards a harmless, fun competition between the players of the chamber orchestra as they try to outbid each other for the funkiest rhythm with a strangely intoned melody.

he work is included in the “Golden Dolden Box Set” available under the “merchandise” tab. This box set includes all my music, scores , essays, and educational talks from 1984 to 2021.

The first 20 years I produced dissonant dense textures. Since 2000 more melodic. ... more
