Muses’ Song.

Paul Dolden 2013. For saxophone and tape.13’53”

Commissioned and performed on alto sax by David Brutti (Italy).

The muses attended the festivals on Mount Olympus and entertained and inspired the Immortals with their wit and charm. Apollo would put aside his bow and play the lyre while the muses sang of the ending gifts that immortals enjoy.

In this work the saxophone replaces the lyre, but the dance and song of the muses continues.

The work is based on the variations of a single melodic idea. In the first half of the work the soloist plays these melodic variations surrounded by sweet sounding orchestration. In the second half the soloist continues with the same variations but is surrounded by a more aggressive percussion orchestra.

The work is included in the "Golden Dolden Box Set" available under the "merchandise" tab. This box set includes all my music, scores, essays, and educational talks from 1984 to 2021.
