about

In the Natural Doorway I Crouch is inspired by the interaction between two distinct sound worlds: plucked metal strings and wind instruments. The composition is divided into three sections of three, five and seven minutes, respectively, each of which explores the relationship between the sound worlds as they constantly evolve. This movement in sound is evoked by the title, which suggests the transformation from one state to another, as in a doorway, which acts as a passageway between areas of sound. In most cases the crouching is only momentary as we spring from one area to another.

This work is the only one of mine composed entirely in Just Intonation, as I usually combine Just and other tuning systems.

The work also arises from the fashionable texture/music theories of “spectral music,” popular at the time. Fortunately, it was spared from damnation in the eternal academic boring egghead section by the fashion industry. Important clues as to how the music was created are gleaned from a careful study of this 1985 photo, taken the same year in which the work was composed. Clearly my suspenders are keeping my system of “floating just intonation” in place, while my gelled hair controls the Sheppard tones in the work, hair simultaneously rising and falling. My gentle slow swagger down the alley controls the almost imperceptible glissando of the work.

Thank you to my old friend David Strong who recently sent me this photo, on the occasion of my 65th birthday. Of course, my living in a parallel universe along with Stockhausen, Sun Ra and Dorian Grey ensures that I still look exactly like the 29 year old in the photo!

The work was commissioned by GMEB in France. Production of the work occurred in their studio, the EMS studio in Stockholm, and the composers’ private studio.

he work is included in the “Golden Dolden Box Set” available under the “merchandise” tab. This box set includes all my music, scores , essays, and educational talks from 1984 to 2021.

about

Paul Dolden Val Morin, Québec

For 40 years I have been mixing hundreds of recorded musical parts , with each track being recorded one at a time. I write the score before I go in my studio. Works are solo studio compositions or commissions for live soloist(s) and tape. I develop my own tuning systems and use multiple tempos at the same time. The first 20 years I produced dissonant dense textures. Since 2000 more melodic. ... more
