about

“Beyond the Walls of Jericho” is the third and final work in a trilogy of works I call the “Walls Cycle”. The three works are perhaps the most intense sounding music I have ever created in the studio.
All three works were inspired by the biblical story of the Walls of Jericho, in which sound was used to collapse walls and create social change. Through out the works the anonymous massed texture of 400 tracks sounding all seven octaves with each octave being divided into 48 notes acts as a sound metaphor for the power of sound. This third work re introduces human subjectivity, which it also dissolves into anonymous massed textures. This subjectivity is represented by the multi tracking of “free jazz” gestures and colours. I recorded dozens of free jazz musicians honking, screaming with the motives of this work on their different horns. At 45” you hear the same music played extremely softly with the microphones placed almost on each instrument. Further short textures of bowed metal and plucked strings then occur and at 3’00” we are again in free jazz hell. All the subjectivity of free jazz is dissolved into a mass sound field capable of knocking down walls.
The work originally created in 1991 was re-mastered in 2000. A further re-mastering occurred in 2012 with the superior sound quality of today's’ technology. My other reason for doing this 2012 re-mastering is I have learned a lot more about audio engineering and believe I am getting a better sound in the mixing and mastering stage. Finally I had lived with the work for another 20 years and quite frankly I understand it better. This maturity could be compared to how a performer or conductor brings more maturity to later performances of the same work.

The program notes i wrote at the time of composition and further information can be found at the following URL. During the late 80s and early 90s i was under the spell of post modern theory. Do not worry if you do not understand these program notes. Just stick my "song" in your ears.

about

Paul Dolden Val Morin, Québec

For 40 years I have been mixing hundreds of recorded musical parts , with each track being recorded one at a time. I write the score before I go in my studio. Works are solo studio compositions or commissions for live soloist(s) and tape. I develop my own tuning systems and use multiple tempos at the same time. The first 20 years I produced dissonant dense textures. Since 2000 more melodic. ... more
