Below the Walls of Jericho. 1988-89. (Re-mastered in 2012)

“Below the Walls of Jericho” is the first work in a trilogy of works I called the “Walls Cycle”. I have already uploaded the third movement called “Beyond the Walls of Jericho.” This first part, was intended to portray the actual knocking down of the Walls of Jericho, therefore massed textures of 400 to 800 tracks of acoustic instruments are assembled for this sonic attack.

The score with program notes can be viewed here: electrocd.com/en/partition/8049/Paul_Dolden/Below_the_Walls_of_Jericho/Listening_Transcription

No work of mine has created so much anger and hostility from people. The work has been used twice in science experiments to create an atmosphere of pain. In one of the studies Mozart, by contrast, was used to induce pleasure. I know many of my listeners would have the opposite responses to Dolden and Mozart. Perhaps scientists no longer have any sense of aesthetic perception. Here is a recent interpretation of the Walls cycle I like:

Another interpretation I would suggest is that the Walls Cycle has more to do with terrifying aspect of the sublime, which are beautiful in their sheer power and size, and the wonder of things larger than our small unimportant lives.

The work is included in the “Golden Dolden Box Set” available under the “merchandise” tab. This box set includes all my music, scores , essays, and educational talks from 1984 to 2021.

Paul Dolden Val Morin, Québec

For 40 years I have been mixing hundreds of recorded musical parts , with each track being recorded one at a time. I write the score before I go in my studio. Works are solo studio compositions or commissions for live soloist(s) and tape. I develop my own tuning systems and use multiple tempos at the same time. The first 20 years I produced dissonant dense textures. Since 2000 more melodic. ... more
