Seven of these works were done since 2016, and have only been heard by my dog!

Introduction. Written by Lawrence Joseph.

It may not yet be on the official list, but what is collected here in the Golden Dolden Box Set is a strong candidate for the Eighth Wonder of the World. Like the Great Pyramids of Egypt, one can marvel at the near-impossibility of the final construction and puzzle over how it was done. Like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the works are impressively multi-tiered and include a dizzying array of architectural styles. Like the Temple of Artemis, the magnificent works here have been rebuilt several times; included in this Box Set are final remixed and remastered versions of several older works. Finally, aside from the sheer enormity of the achievement, the works contained in this Box Set are also reminiscent of the Wonders of the World in having been inspired by ancient tales, as hinted at in titles such as “Beyond the Walls of Jericho” and “Histoires d’histoire.”

Almost matching the lifetime of studio work necessary to produce the music in this Box Set will be the listener’s task of fully absorbing the voluminous material. Not only do you get decades worth of musical output, but each individual work is so detailed that one can spend many months delving into each one, successive listens revealing previously unobserved layers. Helping you to understand the complexity of the music are Dolden’s educational lectures, in which you learn not only about the works and the processes behind them, but more generally about composing and digital audio. And if that were not enough, you also get overviews of the composer’s thoughts through time about his own musical development and how it fits into the wider world of new music. Add to that full program notes for each work (sometimes with multiple versions of these notes), as well as many of the scores themselves. Considering that many of the scores contain hundreds of tracks, often using different tuning systems and different tempos simultaneously, you had better clear some quality time if you want to take in the full scope of this package.

Whether you decide to proceed chronologically and take in each work in-depth before moving on to the next, or prefer to listen to all pieces before later delving into the lectures, essays and scores, any time spent on the music and writings here will be amply rewarded. The Box Set will appeal to diverse audiences: First and foremost, fans of adventurous music can do no better than to listen to the music contained herein, arguably among the most creative and original ever imagined. Fans of rock music will revel in the amazing guitar solos and heavy walls of drumming integrated into many of the works. Open-eared jazz fans will appreciate the way in which soloing is stretched to extremes of melody and rhythm. Electro-acoustic music fans will find an alternative to the typical narratives based on the classical teaching of Stockhausen, Berio and Xenakis; here is a wider approach that incorporates not only this small subset but just about all possible musics of the world. Fans of classical music will discover another way the music could have evolved had most composers not been afraid to incorporate some rock beats with heavier syncopation and multi-rhythms into their music.

From an educational perspective, those concerned with the history of composed music who might wonder how “third stream” music might have more profitably evolved will find music that does not stop at two streams, proceeding to almost infinite streams of seamlessly fused sources. Indeed, the number of resources tapped into for the music on this Box Set stretches the boundaries of contemporary composition, rock, jazz and world musics, often cramming them all into the same musical section. Fans of any of these streams will be amazed at how far into the future this music will bring them. Serious students of music will profit from the educational lectures and scores, while explanations of how the different digital formats subtly affect the quality of sound will inform those more tech-minded.

If this music took a lifetime of unstinting careful labour (and fun!) to realize, it will be almost as much work (and fun!) to go through and fully absorb all details. While incredible effort has been taken to explain the music in the multitude of lectures and essays included here, the ultimate beauty lies in the fact the music still remains mysterious, seductive and stunning like no other music. Indeed, after listening to some Dolden, many listeners may find it pretty tough to go back to anything else. Fortunately, with this Box Set you will not have to do that for a very long time! So fire up one of those astonishing sounding 96kHz files and pop open the “Overview” document and start your journey!

about

Paul Dolden Val Morin, Québec

For 40 years I have been mixing hundreds of recorded musical parts , with each track being recorded one at a time. I write the score before I go in my studio. Works are solo studio compositions or commissions for live soloist(s) and tape. I develop my own tuning systems and use multiple tempos at the same time. The first 20 years I produced dissonant dense textures. Since 2000 more melodic. ... more
